What Failures Have Taught Me

It’s funny how people would assume that you are an overnight success… They see one successful project and say you have a knack for it and make it sound like it’s a skill that you were definitely born with – can they even imagine the years it took you to master your craft? They get jealous of your big break and talk about it like it’s just luck you got it – were they even there when you had countless rejections it shattered your self esteem? have they counted the days and nights and extended hours you’ve spent preparing for this make-or-break game-changing opportunity? I don’t think so.

It took me years of dreaming and visioning to start… It took me more years to struggle through the birth pains… and even now – years after I gave birth to my brain child – I’m still learning and changing and evolving with the times… This is how it is when you decide to live your passion… Who ever said it was easy was well, optimistic!

So here are some lessons that my failures have taught me:

  1. Activity without purpose, makes one spent!: Choose the things you spend your time and resources on- always have the end in mind – for me, it means that everything that you do for your business must be something that makes you a step closer to your vision for your company.  All those projects you keep doing for free? it will pay off if it means improving your craft or growing your network. But all those tasks that you keep doing that does not support your goals – will make you tired and stressed and spent! Learn to say NO to projects not consistent to your goals – no matter how tempting – if it does not support the ecosystem you’re trying to build? Say NO!

  2. Surrender: It may sound a bit magical to most of you – but experience has taught me that there are things that we can control – and there are things that we can not control. Sometimes, we want something too bad too soon – we end up not getting it! No matter how carefully you have prepared your time line – no matter how flawless the plan – it will go wrong! – not being pessimistic but it always pays to have a contingency plan. During execution many things will go wrong – it is beyond your control – but how you respond – your focus and your creativity and your contingency plans are things that you can. Defer the drama!Copy of Copy of Copy of Copy of Copy of happybirthDay
  3. Just Keep Swimming: No matter how small as long as you’re consistent, you will get there! Sometimes the tides are working for you – swim fast, if the tides are not – then swim slow – it will be difficult- but don’t stop! everyday you get yourself out there and plant! you see, some people are more interested in how much you harvest – but for us – what matters is how much we plant – this determines our harvest. Ignore the discouragements and mockery and doubts – let them doubt you – but never doubt yourself! Improve yourself and your craft everyday – get up and be there! Just. Keep. Swimming!Copy of Copy of Copy of happybirthDay
  4. Choose your battles: This is not about fighting people – this is more about doing one thing until it’s done! Multi-tasking is a myth – I heard, and I agree – it’s just jumping from one thing to another without really completing one – it’s being overwhelmed with your to-do list and tricking your self that you’re busy and therefore productive- but at the and of the day – do you have at least one completed task or just a series of things that you’ve started? – and not really a single item ticked off your To-Do List but a longer To-Do List for tomorrow? Breathe and don’t be distracted – keep doing it until it’s done then move on to the next. Copy of Copy of Copy of Copy of happybirthDay
  5. The Beginner Mindset: There will be too many humbling experiences as we move in this world so I’ve learned to see things like a beginner – generous with what I know and hungry for more. The moment we start to believe that we are the best at what we do, that will be the moment we stop learning and giving and sharing. And we start believing that we can achieve things on our own and we can do things without help. Do not be complacent. There will be times too when we feel inadequate and second guess our dreams – don’t! we will be better – do better things and have better rewards. Keep evolving! Copy of Copy of happybirthDay
  6. Have Healthy Habits: We’ve heard and read it too many times already – excellence is a habit, success is a habit. I have learned that for you to get really far you need to be consistent. I’ve learned to develop habits that has made me BE who I really want to BE. We clean our office and review our numbers and plan our strategies and update our action plans because there’s a client coming – everybody has their best foot forward and prepared to answer any question a potential client might ask – now imagine being in that state everyday because it has already become a habit? Wonderful isn’t it? We’re prepared and excellent everyday. Culture eats strategy for breakfast! Set a standard!happybirthDay
  7. You are responsible: Give yourself a little credit; never make your lack as an excuse for not giving your dreams a shot. Afraid to fail, to be rejected, to make mistakes, to look bad and disappoint people… Waiting for money, time, opportunity, signs and approval… These are excuses that your mind makes to talk you out of leaving your comfort zone – reclaim your life and make a choice! Stick to it and don’t let you life run on auto pilot till the day you find yourself on your death bed. Make the most of what you have – be grateful of what you have. Lack and abundance are two parallel paths – Choose! Fear and Trust are parallel too – Choose!Copy of happybirthDay

The Dignity of Work

Hello!

Did you know that Power Source Success Academy was brought about by the need for jobs? We believe that people need to make money to enjoy the world more. Nothing is as rewarding than seeing those who come to us financially empowered and ready to take on life after training and coaching with us.

We started as a confidence & communications academy to train people to speak and be ready to work in a call center – a booming industry that employs millions of Filipinos- until now.

But for the past years universities have come to us to train their graduating students and prepare them for employment. Local Government Units have asked our help to teach their constituents & beneficiaries leadership and entrepreneurial skills. Some private companies too have sought our services from corporate skills enhancement workshops to team building sessions. We take pride in our continuously expanding network.

However, because of this growth – we have found ourselves giving lesser & lesser attention to our real purpose – to help people get jobs. So in 2017, we have scheduled all Saturdays to #StudyCircleBaguio! A project that will allow us to learn more skills that will increase our employability and earning ability! On top of our all time favorite digital literacy workshops and communications training we are adding more topics and more experts and more employers too! We are very excited!

Here are some of the topics lined up:

  • Social Media Management: Blogging, Search Engine Optimization, and more!
  • Business Model Canvas for Entrepreneurs
  • Photography and Photo Editing
  • Work From Home Courses: Basics of Freelancing to Developing your own niche.

The Power Source Success Academy #StudyCircles will be as diverse and dynamic as the participants and facilitators so we cannot really tell you what to expect – but this is something you can expect: #SaturdayStudyCircle Sessions are FREE!  So follow our page: Power Source Academy on Facebook for a more updated schedule. Or you can just send us a message to get what’s latest: 09159950973.

Here’s a more personal note to end this: Sometimes, we just need to stop – to allow ourselves to remember and go back to our purpose. To be reminded that although we can be anything and anyone we want to be, we cannot be everything to everyone. We hope you find peace in simplicity and authenticity.

Let us also share something that portray everything we stand up for: “Not having a job is not simply a question of not having the means to life: NO. We can eat every day, we can go to welfare, we can go to an association, a club, we can go there and they will give us something to eat. But this is not the problem. The problem is not being able to bring bread to the table at home: this is a serious problem, this takes away our dignity. And the most serious problem is not hunger, even though the problem exists. The most serious problem is that of dignity. For this reason we must work and defend the dignity that work gives us.” A quote from Pope Francis: during a pastoral visit to the Italian region of Molise, July 5, 2014

Haters at the Workplace

You feel it in your gut. There are haters among us at the workplace. Sarcastic, cruel and judgmental. It starts with nasty remarks that escalate to bullying. It just isn’t healthy going to work anymore!

How do you spot a hater?

  1. They Criticize: Criticisms are good – your friends do that sometimes – but when someone does it in public then you probably have a hater in the workplace.
  2. They Compare: Comparing themselves to others and putting them down- these haters think that the more they put someone down – the more next level they become – there is just not enough sun for everyone for these people.Be careful.
  3.  They Gossip: Gossip and bad mouthing – it’s not enough that they put someone down with their negativity and insults – they also do it in their victim’s absence – building an army of people who hate – a bunch of workplace bullies. Misery really likes company.

So why do these workplace monster’s hate?

  1. Success: No matter how small a milestone it could be a success is still a success- compliments and a job well done – this ticks a hater off and they will be on to their next prey!
  2. Hurt: Because hurt people hurt people – Sometimes, their hate has really nothing to do with how they feel about you – most of the time it’s just a reflection of how they feel about themselves – weak, inferior and unworthy. Haters gonna hate, regardless.
  3. Jealousy: Haters hate on their prey because they’re doing the things that they cannot do, will not do – because they’re too entitled, or plainly just too afraid to attempt.

But these are people that at least 1/3 of each day are spent with and as much as retaliating and getting even are the more pleasurable response; let’s come up with better ways to deal with them and keep our bliss at the workplace.

  1. Don’t take things to heart: sometimes there’s a little truth in what these haters say – take it as a form of feedback and improve your self- but for everything else – especially the negativity – just ignore.
  2. Don’t reciprocate and don’t apologize either: There are places where you can discuss things but a haters favorite place will be in front of an audience – being the attention seekers and drama queens that they are – don’t give it to them. Grace has more effect than beauty. There’s always a time and place for everything.
  3. Kill them with kindness: As much as you require respect – it’s something that haters deserve as well – and no matter how annoying they become – don’t stop at being great. They are a natural part of every work place – they criticize when your new, they hate you when your good – but they will admire you when you’re great.

Haters will hate, regardless. As long as you’re on to something great there will be haters. There are things you can do to avoid them: Stay at the background, don’t do anything extraordinary, don’t set goals and just be average. Will it be worth it though? Your answer is as good as mine. Cheers! and always have fun at work.

Deadlines and Procrastination

Deadlines are good… It makes us panic and grind – without it, we’ll find ourselves stuck in bed for weeks catching up on our TV series or mindlessly scrolling up and down our phone stalking people on Facebook or glued on YouTube for days!
A task that needs to be done gets done – bills are paid, papers are finished, emails are sent, projects are completed. Deadlines are good.

But procrastination is deadlier than what we think – it’s beyond tasks and projects that need completion that we put off till the last minute. It’s about a life purpose that needs to be taken… Happiness that needs to take place – but procrastinators delay it until… But wait! There’s no deadline! Yes. There’s no deadline for happiness and dreams – and some people just delay it year after year after year… And that’s when procrastination becomes really deadly!

Delaying a life project or dream travel or leaving a toxic relationship. Decisions that should have been made a long time ago.

It’s sad that without deadlines most procrastinators stay and dwell in unhappiness and longing. Without it we don’t seem to feel the urgency of living a life of fulfillment and happiness. Break the chains of procrastination and start living the life you deserve.

Set a deadline – it’s NOW! Just go ahead and take that leap to happiness. No more excuses.

Starting Over

Anyone who has lost a job can tell you that the experience ranks right down there with death of a loved one or a break-up. Call it whatever you want: Downsizing. Resizing. Redundancy Elimination. Dismissal. To be canned, axed or fumigated — it still affects not only income and a family’s well being but more importantly, one’s own sense of personal worth… but it’s no sin and no disgrace.. It can happen to anyone… Remember: “That which does not kill me, makes me stronger!”

Paulo Coelho has wonderfully put it in words:

One always has to know when a stage comes to an end. If we insist on staying longer than the necessary time, we lose the happiness and the meaning of the other stages we have to go through.
Closing cycles, shutting doors, ending chapters – whatever name we give it, what matters is to leave in the past the moments of life that have finished.

Did you lose your job?

You can spend a long time wondering why this has happened.

You can tell yourself you won’t take another step until you find out why certain things that were so important and so solid in your life have turned into dust, just like that.
But such an attitude will be awfully stressing for everyone involved. Everyone is finishing chapters, turning over new leaves, getting on with life, and they will all feel bad seeing you at a standstill.

Things pass, and the best we can do is to let them really go away.

That is why it is so important however painful it may be! To just let things go. Release them. Detach yourself from them.

Nobody plays this life with marked cards, sometimes we win and sometimes we lose.
Do not expect anything in return; do not expect your efforts to be appreciated or your genius to be discovered.

Stop turning on your emotional television to watch the same program over and over again, the one that shows how much you suffered from a certain loss: that is only poisoning you, nothing else.

Before a new chapter is begun, the old one has to be finished: tell yourself that what has passed will never come back.
Remember that there was a time when you could live without that job – nothing is irreplaceable, a habit is not a need.
Close those cycles — not because of pride, incapacity or arrogance, but simply because it no longer fits your life.

Shut the door, change the record, clean the house, and shake off the dust.

Stop being who you were, and change into who you are.!

#PrepareToWin

Success happens when opportunity meets preparation.

Opportunities are always present, it will always present itself in many forms. You see it somewhere, you hear it from a friend, your feet brought you there – those moments we consider either lucky or unfortunate.

Lucky if we are prepared. Unfortunate if we let it slip because we were not ready for it.

We all have dreams and visions of what we really want in life and from life… we spend a lot of time visualizing it, attracting it, and claiming it! Yet we forget that we need to grow to meet these dreams… we need to be in that moment when we are ready – truly ready to receive it – if we’re ready we can succeed, if we’re not – then we can’t.

It takes one step to start and many steps to grow. Start now! #PrepareToWin!
